Excerpt: As recently as the 1990s, Harvard sociologist Mich猫le Lamont found that working-class men in the New York City area held generally positive attitudes toward immigrants, describing them as 鈥渇amily oriented鈥 and 鈥渉ard workers, just like us.鈥 Yet real wage growth for the working class has been abysmal for a generation, and for many native-born blue-collar workers the culprit seems obvious鈥攊mmigration. 鈥淢y fianc茅鈥檚 worked at the same company for 21 years and it鈥檚 a union [job], and they are hiring Mexicans,鈥 one Trump voter told the Public Religion Research Institute. 鈥淎nd I don鈥檛 want to be racial, but that鈥檚 all they鈥檙e hiring.
